  • Bangkok, the capital of Thailand is known in the country as "Krung Thep". This is a much shortened form of the full name. Krung Thep roughly translates to City of Angels, inhabitants of Los Angeles may like to note. Incidentally, "Bangkok" is a anglicised version of the Thai phrase for Plum Orchard - a reference to where the first Farang traders where allowed to setup by the Monarch.
  • Chocolate man. Thai slang for a black guy, no offensive intended
  • Farang. Literally "foreigner", but only actually used when referring to people of European descent - naturally white skins.
  • Farang Shark - term applied to a Thai woman well practised in the art of getting her teeth into a Farang and consuming his wealth.
  • Mama San might be referred to as Madam in a French bordello. She's there to make sure the women keep the clientele entertained.
  • Mekong river: Mekong river, Nong Khai, June 2003 The big river that came to fame during the Vietnam war, forms the border between Thailand and Laos for part of its length. It's true name is the "Kong" not the Mekong. The "Me" sound (short for "Me Nahm") actually means "River" in Thai.
