Great Circle Calculator

The Great Circle calculator featured on these pages is a professional grade Java applet consisting of over 4000 lines of code. It was written by a professional Java programmer (myself) with meticulous care taken to ensure that it works in all major browsers.

The calculator is used daily by hundreds of people working for a vast range of businesses from airlines, banks, shipping companies, couriers, etc.. Over the 6 years it has been freely available I have received numerous emails from around the world praising the calculator's accuracy. Many of these have been from professionals with substantially greater knowledge of navigation techniques than myself - airline pilots, college professors, etc... Over this time I have not received a single email criticising its accuracy.

Up to now the calculator has been totally free and without any advertising. However as with all things in the real world, nothing is really free. To date all the costs of developing and providing the calculator online have been borne by myself. As the level of usage and hence webserver bandwidth rises this position is becoming unsustainable. Thus, it is with some regret that I am now seeking sponsorship for it.

I'm open to ideas as to what form advertising sponsorship will form. Possibly a couple of simple click throughs on all the GC pages. Something along the lines of what you can see in the Thai Guide.

If you're still reading you may be asking How Much ? Well I would rather like you to make an offer rather than me asking for a specific amount. You know how much you can pay and what it's worth to you. Ideally I am looking for an annual sponsorship deal that corresponds to the billing dates of my website (May-April).

What you get for your money is very much a matter of how much you're willing to spend. Here are a few ideas;

• Targeted advertising. When somebody selects a pair of cities it could be that they are looking to fly between those places, if you're in the travel business we could direct them to your partially completed booking form quote. I imagine a few possibilities for companies that sell navigation equipment - GPS receivers and the like.
  
• Regular (weekly?) emails of server logs listing hits on the FAQ.
  I routinely resolve client ip addresses to domain names so these may give you an idea of who's looking at it and thus allow you to target your own advertising accordingly
  
• Pop-up adverts?
